Often a useful starting point for a first surf trip, with drier weather in the northwest. This does not mean every break is small or safe.

Timing is everything.
Flexibility is better.
There is no single “best month” for everyone. Match your ability and travel style to the coast, then keep a little room for the forecast.
Pacific green season
Southern swells can bring more energy. Plan around rain, road conditions and your actual ability, with time for rest days.
The Caribbean
Don’t apply the Pacific calendar to Puerto Viejo. Check the Caribbean forecast before committing to a surf-focused stay.
Before you paddle out
Check swell direction, period, wind and tide together. A height number alone cannot tell you how a particular break will behave. Watch several sets from shore and ask where the currents run.
Have a smaller-wave option and a non-surf day in your plan. Never force a session because it is your last day.
